A career built at the intersection of engineering innovation and medical technology
A serial entrepreneur and inventor, Billy co-founded Owlstone Nanotech, developing microchip-based chemical sensors used across sectors including defence, environmental monitoring and healthcare. Building on this work, he later founded Owlstone Medical, where he leads the development of non-invasive diagnostic technologies based on breath analysis.
Under Billy’s leadership, Owlstone Medical has grown into a global organisation, with technologies deployed across more than 150 clinical sites. His work has enabled new approaches to disease detection, supporting advances in early diagnosis and precision medicine, and was awarded the prestigious MacRobert Award in 2018.
Billy has secured significant investment and has led the translation of research into commercially viable healthcare solutions.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2020 and awarded the Academy’s Silver Medal for his contributions to engineering innovation.
