Former Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland
With a career spanning research, policy and academic leadership, Professor Dame Muffy Calder has focused on improving the safety and reliability of complex digital systems.
A computer scientist by training, Muffy’s research centres on modelling and automated reasoning for sensor-driven systems, with applications in areas such as privacy, infrastructure and national security. Her work has contributed to strengthening the resilience of many systems that underpin modern society.
Muffy served as Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Glasgow for 10 years and previously held the role of Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland. She has also contributed extensively to national science policy, including through the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and UKRI.
Muffy’s career reflects a consistent commitment to applying rigorous computer science to real-world challenges.
She was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2013 and later was awarded a Damehood for services to science and engineering.
