Senior Vice President at the Institution of Civil Engineers
Sir John Armitt is one of the UK’s most influential civil engineers, with a career spanning major national infrastructure projects and public policy.
He is best known for his role as Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, where he oversaw the delivery of venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Earlier in his career, John served as Chief Executive of Network Rail, Railtrack and Costain, as well as leading the development of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
John has played a central role in shaping long-term infrastructure strategy in the UK. His independent Armitt Review set out a framework for long-term planning, while his work with the National Infrastructure Commission has informed government policy across transport, energy and water systems.
Alongside his executive career, John has held numerous leadership roles, including Chairman of National Express and City & Guilds, and President of the Institution of Civil Engineers throughout 2015 and 2016.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1993, awarded a CBE in 1996 and knighted in 2012 for services to engineering and construction.
