Developing technologies for steel processing, reducing CO2 emissions and the first Fellow to be elected an MP
Hon Chris McDonald MP operates at the intersection of engineering, industry and public policy, as an engineer, business leader, innovator and a dedicated MP.
As Chief Executive of the Materials Processing Institute, Chris led its transformation into an independent, not-for-profit research centre, safeguarding jobs and expanding its impact across heavy industry. His work has focused on improving industrial processes, particularly in steel production, with an emphasis on reducing emissions and increasing efficiency. A strong advocate for the sector, Chris has advised government on industrial strategy and served as Chair of the UK Metals Council, championing the role of engineering in economic growth.
In 2024, Chris was elected Member of Parliament for Stockton North, bringing engineering expertise directly into national policymaking.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2022, in recognition of his leadership in industry and innovation.
