Professor Tong Sun’s work sits at the intersection of photonics, sensing and real-world engineering application.
As Professor of Sensor Engineering at City St Georges, University of London, Tong has developed optical sensing technologies used across sectors including civil engineering, aerospace, transport and healthcare. Her research extends into areas such as environmental monitoring, drug detection and safety-critical systems.
Tong is widely recognised for building strong links between academia and industry, ensuring that her research delivers practical impact. She has authored more than 300 technical papers and holds multiple patents, reflecting sustained innovation in sensor technology.
She also plays an active role in international engineering communities, contributing to advisory groups and committees.
She was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2020 and has also been awarded an OBE for services to engineering.
