Specialising in fire safety science and engineering and promoting building safety and resilience
Professor Luke Bisby is a structural engineer specialising in fire safety science and engineering, with internationally recognised expertise in how materials and structures behave under fire conditions.
Based at the University of Edinburgh, where he is Chair of Fire and Structures and directs the Edinburgh Fire Research Centre, Luke’s work has driven a global step change in structural fire testing, analysis and design. His research has helped move the field towards more realistic, performance-based approaches that better reflect real-world fire scenarios. Luke is also recognised as a world authority on the fire performance of fibre-reinforced polymer composites, particularly in structural strengthening and concrete reinforcement applications. His findings have informed engineering practice and education, and have contributed to the development of international regulations, codes, and standards.
Alongside his research, Luke is a dedicated educator and a prominent voice in discussions around building safety and resilience.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021.
