A tireless advocate for green technology and entrepreneurship
Professor Juergen Maier is a major figure within the British Industrial sector. Former Chief Executive of Siemens UK, and currently start-up Chair of Great British Energy.
An Austrian born in Germany, Juergen came to Leeds in 1974, later going onto Nottingham Trent University to study [roduction engineering – a Siemens-sponsored programme.
He began his career with Siemens shortly after university, in a graduate engineering role at its Congleton factory in Cheshire. Over a 33-year career at Siemens, Juergen quickly rose up the ranks, becoming Manufacturing Director at Congleton, before moving to head office roles.
Juergen eventually took over as Siemens UK CEO. Under his leadership, Siemens grew to play a pivotal role in the digitalisation and decarbonisation of UK industry.
After his time at Siemens, Juergen’s reputation as an industry leader earned him roles in government. He served as a board member on the Department for Business and Energy, and chaired several industry reviews, including the Made Smarter Review, which formed the backbone of UK government policy on the manufacturing sector.
Juergen has long believed in the power of business to affect positive change. To this end, he co-founded vocL, a social enterprise platform aimed at empowering businesses to develop responsible voices.
For his work in this field, he has received several honorary doctorates and industry accolades. In 2017, Juergen was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
