Technikos Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University of Oxford
Professor Alison Noble is a biomedical engineer and leading innovator in the intersecting fields of AI and clinical medicine, and currently serves as Technikos Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford.
Fascinated in robotics from an early age, Alison initially undertook a degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, before specialising her PhD research on computer vision.
After completing her PhD, Alison moved to the US, where she joined General Electric’s R&D Centre, focusing on developing systems for automated image-based aircraft engine inspection and manufacturing processing monitoring.
In 1995, Alison returned to the University of Oxford to work on what was then the emerging new academic discipline of computer vision for medical imaging applications. She was elected the first female Statutory Professor of Engineering at the University of Oxford in 2008.
Her pioneering research in this field has placed Alison at the forefront of international thought at the intersection between medicine and AI. By applying artificial intelligence—particularly its powerful pattern recognition ability—together with her team and clinical collaborators she has contributed to transforming the way medical imaging, especially ultrasound imaging can be acquired and analysed, enabling improved clinical workflow and supporting earlier diagnosis.
Alison’s extensive track record, not only as a prominent AI researcher, but also as an advocate for women in engineering, has earned her widespread industry recognition, including as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
