Quantifying disaster risk for renewable energy and developing countries, and leading an engineering first approach to disaster response
Dr Joshua Macabuag is a civil engineer who specialises in catastrophe risk modelling and infrastructure resilience.
He is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Renew Risk, where he has led advances in quantifying disaster risk for energy systems, particularly in the renewable sector. Joshua’s work has also supported global development initiatives, including projects with the World Bank focused on risk in vulnerable regions.
Alongside his commercial work, Joshua is a leading figure in disaster response engineering. As part of the UK’s urban search and rescue capability, he has deployed to major international emergencies, including earthquakes in Nepal, Albania and Turkey, Hurricane Irma, and the Beirut port explosion.
His career uniquely combines technical modelling with real-world application, helping organisations better understand, prepare for and respond to extreme events
Joshua was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2023 and awarded an OBE in 2025 for services to engineering and disaster response.
