Research Fellowships 2020
Dr Auro Perego’s research interests are in the field of photonics, at the interface between applied physics and engineering. In his Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship project he is investigating the fundamental science and technological applications of optical frequency comb light sources. Optical frequency combs are ultraprecise rulers of light, made of equally spaced frequencies – colours – of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be generated in several photonic platforms such as optical resonators, lasers, and nonlinear waveguides. Optical frequency combs offer promising solutions for a variety of applications including sensing, molecular fingerprinting, optical communications, the search for exoplanets, and microscopy.
As a Research Fellow at Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) he is pursuing research on the theory and applications of mode-locking in lasers, optical solitons, instabilities of light waves, parametric amplification in nonlinear waveguides, and optical computing.
