Research Fellowships 2019
Dr Colchester aims to revolutionise minimally invasive surgery by developing novel, miniaturised imaging and sensing devices, with a particular focus on ‘optical ultrasound’ (OpUS). Current technology is inadequate to provide guidance and diagnostics for many surgical procedures. This modality, OpUS, which uses light to both generate and receive ultrasound, is ideally suited to fill this gap. It can provide high-resolution imaging in real time and is well suited to miniaturisation and the integration of complementary imaging and therapeutic modalities. Dr Colchester’s research is currently focused on developing submillimetre imaging devices which can be integrated into needles and catheters for medical imaging, with a view to being used in for example, cardiovascular procedures and gastrointestinal procedures.
