Research Fellowships 2018
Dr Long Seng To is Joint Director of the Centre for Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment and Resilience (STEER) at Loughborough University. Her research, tackles the challenge of providing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all (UN Sustainable Development Goal 7) in the context of increasing stresses and shocks, such as climate change, disasters, and conflicts in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Pacific.
In 2018, she was awarded an Engineering for Development Research Fellowship (EDRF) by the Royal Academy of Engineering which focuses on enhancing community energy resilience using renewable energy in the Global South. The work brings together a broad range of stakeholders to codesign solutions. The EDRF aims to help engineers to design more resilient energy systems by building on existing community energy resilience strategies and local innovations. This involves experimental work in Malawi and Nepal to refine wider lessons for the global community.

The research also includes developing methodologies and tools for the design of energy infrastructure using an interdisciplinary, sociotechnical systems approach that includes the interaction of energy with other critical infrastructures and community structures.
She is also Co-Investigator of the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) programme where she leads work on MECS in humanitarian settings, and Co-Investigator of the CESET project which focuses on community energy in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Mozambique. She is a member of the UN Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM), Renewables Working Group where she contributed to the UN standard for solar energy resource classification and was appointed Chair of the Solar Energy Subgroup of the EGRM in 2021.
