Research Fellowships 2018
The Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship has enabled Dr Fernando Perez-Cota to develop a new microscopy technique called Phonon Microscopy. This is an opto-acoustic technique capable of imaging cellular properties at optical and super-optical resolution. From this project, he has continued to develop imaging technologies for cell imaging, super-resolution phonon imaging, and endoscopy.
He is also applying these technologies in different areas such as cancer research, ophthalmology, plant biology, and fertility. All these areas benefit from the contrast provided by acoustics where Phonon Microscopy can provide a level of resolution not yet obtainable by any other technique. Through ongoing work at University of Nottingham he also continues to develop phonon technologies that are easier to use and less expensive so they could potentially be broadly adopted in the future in both clinical and research environments.
