Professor Tsaftaris aims to make AI models more robust, trustworthy and fair. Current black-box AI learns from data (and annotations) but this has serious implications on data collection costs, privacy and overall efficacy. Importantly learning purely from data makes AI susceptible to spurious correlations which in turn can lead to lack of robustness and fairness. Our research focuses on creating next-gen AI that learns with less data and less annotations, by understanding how AI models learn and represent information. Our research is driven by application needs of the healthcare, society, and climate sectors and is tightly connected to industry, translation and impact to these sectors.
