Research Chairs and Senior Research Fellowships 2016-17
Professor Bruecker research focus is the interdisciplinary subject of nature inspired flow sensing and manipulation for sustainable transport, including airborne and underwater systems. Learning from nature about new principles of passive and active flow control systems, Professor Bruecker's research aims to develop an aerodynamic ‘skin’ that can be evaluated for use on future aircraft systems. The approach combines integrated optical sensor arrays with machine learning algorithms for improved flow pattern detection along the skin. This information is then coupled back into distributed actuator arrays within the skin via baromorphing technology. This allows to develop novel flow control technologies for the purpose of reduction of fuel consumption and noise emission in air transport systems while improving efficiency and maneuverability, a key in clean aviation.
