Research Chairs and Senior Research Fellowships 2020-21
Professor Strain is working to deliver scalable photonic integrated circuit technologies harnessing the properties of multiple materials on a single chip. Photonic chips have been traditionally fabricated on single material platforms such as Silicon or Indium Phosphide and are now reaching significant levels of industrial maturity. However, advanced applications of these chips in areas such as quantum information processing, optical computing and ultra-high bandwidth communications require the use of many complementary optical materials in a single circuit. Professor Strain’s group is developing the instrumentation and fabrication processes to enable transfer of micron sized optical devices, with nanometre precision, onto host photonic integrated circuits at manufacturing scales.
