Dr Wang will develop a new type of quantum microscope to discover new phases of quantum matter for novel energy-efficient electronic applications. Modern computing faces a critical challenge: energy consumption. Spin current, which carries information using electrons' spin rather than charge, provides an entirely new solution by reducing power consumption and heat generation during information processing. However, detecting spin currents is severely limited by existing experimental capabilities.
Dr Wang will tackle this challenge by developing a new type of low-temperature scanning probe microscope to visualise spins and magnetic orders in quantum materials. She will further control these magnetic orders by tuning temperature and magnetic fields. Understanding spins in quantum materials will be important for advancing spintronics and novel memory devices. This research will contribute to the development of next-generation spintronic devices and energy-efficient computing.
