Industrial Fellowships 2024
Dr Yukun Hu is an Associate Professor at the Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering Department (CEGE) within the UCL Faculty of Engineering Science. He leads an interdisciplinary research team at UCL’s Infrastructure Systems Institute, focusing on developing safe and low-carbon solutions for engineered systems. With a deep commitment to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in engineering, Dr Hu’s work centres on harnessing AI to address and solve complex engineering challenges, reflecting his dedication to advancing the field through innovative technology.
Dr Hu’s Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowship supported research addresses critical challenges in the automotive industry, which is pivotal to the UK’s economy and its transition to net zero emissions. As the industry shifts towards hybrid and fully electric vehicles, electromagnetic interference (EMI) has emerged as a significant issue affecting the performance, reliability and safety of electronic devices and communication systems within these vehicles. To tackle this, Dr Hu is developing novel AI-based active EMI filters. This innovative project, conducted in collaboration with industry partner Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), leverages interdisciplinary expertise in AI and EMI and benefits from JLR’s world-class automotive testing facilities. The outcome is expected to be a revolutionary advancement in the creation of next-generation active EMI filters for the UK automotive sector.
The Industrial Fellowship advances this pioneering research, driving forward the development of sustainable and inclusive automotive technologies. By addressing EMI challenges with innovative AI solutions, the Fellowship contributes to creating more reliable and safer EVs, promoting a sustainable society. Furthermore, it supports an inclusive economy by fostering collaboration between academia and industry, ensuring that technological advancements are accessible and beneficial to a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the UK and beyond.
