Project title: Co-production of a student-delivered workshop for personal tutors to improve inclusive tutoring (Co-pow!)
Funding awarded: £14,999.78
Project summary:
The previously awarded Ca-pow! project addressed the disparity in outcomes for intersectional students in the Faculty of Engineering, where students identifying as both disabled and ethnic minority (i.e., intersectional) were significantly less likely to graduate with a first-class degree and had a dropout rate 65% higher than their disabled-only or ethnic minority-only (i.e., single marker) peers.
The project sought to better understand these students' experiences by defining intersectional students as those with two or more protected or widening participation characteristics (e.g., disability and aspiring state-school background).
Building on previous workstreams of the Ca-pow! project, this initiative will develop a guide for education-focused leaders in HEIs, such as Directors of Teaching or Senior Tutors, on how to co-produce student-led workshops aimed at improving inclusive student experiences. During the Ca-pow! project, workshops were designed and delivered by intersectional students, to help personal tutors and student-facing staff better support diverse student groups. The guide will draw on our experience of employing 12 intersectional engineering and computer science undergraduates to co-design workshops that engaged 50 university staff members.
