Dr Usa Boonyuen
Dr Usa Boonyuen is a lecturer, researcher, and developer specialising in genetic testing and molecular diagnostics. Her field of expertise includes genomics, enzymology, and biochemistry, with a particular focus on developing affordable, rapid tests for G6PD deficiency to improve access to personalised healthcare. She is deeply passionate about making advancements in healthcare universally accessible to vulnerable populations, aiming to deliver life-saving technologies for early detection and treatment, contributing to international health equity and improving health outcomes globally.
Dr Boonyuen has developed an innovative method of screening for Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) mutations, based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) combined with lateral flow detection, offering superior accuracy and the ability to identify four key genetic mutations. The test can be used in just three steps: mix, drop, and read. It delivers results within 30 minutes, and only requires a constant low temperature (37-42°C) to generate results, demonstrating 100% sensitivity and specificity.
