Dr Sudipto Mukhopadhyay
Dr. Sudipto Mukhopadhyay works at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IITJ). His current work primarily applies computational and experimental techniques to design clean energy systems. He has been awarded multiple research grants, including those from the Ministry of Power (MoP) India, the Ministry of Education (MoE) India, and the Center for High Technology (CHT) India. He earned his PhD in turbulent combustion modeling at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Before his PhD at TU Eindhoven, Sudipto worked in the Engineering and Industrial Services division of Tata Consultancy Services, a leading Indian MNC.
His innovation promises to bring power to communities with low grid connectivity through green-powered micro gas turbines (MGT): small-scale gas turbine units (typically less than 200kW) that negate the traditional principle of conventional gas turbines, and can be used for both distributed power generation, and backup power. MGTs are considered a promising solution due to their lower emissions, and smaller required maintenance. The proposed product is capable of running on biogas produced by farm waste sourced from the local community, providing a source of local, green energy production which can be used for cooking, food processing, and more. The product can be scaled from small to large communities, and will also generate forms of local skilled employment through its operation and maintenance.
