Joel Philpott
Joel has a degree in engineering and a master’s in biomedical engineering masters allowing him to merge his engineering skills with healthcare. He collaborates with clinicians across South Africa to help develop a device that addresses healthcare issues while also working part-time on a ventilator project.
Inspyre is a device that provides a basic level of treatment for sleep apnoea, a condition that affects 936 million people worldwide and is undiagnosed in 85% of cases, which is currently largely inaccessible. The core focus of the device is to improve access to healthcare by way of promoting decentralised care. The device may be used for home-monitoring applications with a basic level of CPAP therapy available, thus allowing doctors to remotely monitor patients before they are admitted to hospital, shortening the length of their hospital stay or preventing them from being admitted to hospital, reducing the cost of care for both the hospital and the patient.
