Eduardo Jr Magdaluyo
Eduardo Magdaluyo Jr is an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, specialising in materials development and sustainable engineering solutions at the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering. His work covers materials synthesis, characterisation, and product development for biomedical, energy, construction, and environmental applications. With extensive experience in applied research, he is committed to creating science-based solutions that address both industrial needs and community challenges. His roles in research, extension service, and professional certification reflect his dedication to advancing responsible and impactful engineering practices.
His innovation focuses on transforming mine tailings, one of the Philippines’ largest industrial waste streams, into hybrid geopolymer–cement composites that function as durable, low-carbon construction materials. Mine waste presents major environmental risks, while cement production contributes significantly to global CO₂ emissions. His technology tackles both issues by converting tailings into safe, high-performance building materials that are fully compatible with existing construction practices and standards. This solution reduces emissions, mitigates waste hazards, and improves material performance, providing a practical pathway to climate-resilient infrastructure. By enabling greener construction and responsible waste management, the innovation supports sustainable development while offering economic and social benefits for mining-affected communities.
