Dr Nguyen Phu Thuong Luu
Dr Nguyen Phu Thuong Luu is a Vietnamese automotive engineering researcher with nearly two decades of experience in crashworthiness, structural optimisation, vehicle safety simulation, and intelligent mobility systems. He currently serves as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Automotive Engineering at Van Lang University, and previously held key leadership roles including Director of the Automotive Simulation R&D Centre and Head of Automotive Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education. With more than 37 SCIE-indexed publications, his work spans finite element analysis, impact biomechanics, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), and smart vehicle systems. In parallel with his research career, he has actively contributed to capacity building and innovation development in Vietnam through mentoring young engineers and fostering international collaborations across Southeast Asia.
His innovation centres on developing a simulation-based pedestrian safety system that combines detailed finite-element crash analysis with predictive algorithms to better understand and mitigate vehicle–pedestrian collisions. The approach enables more accurate estimation of injury severity, highlights structural vulnerabilities in vehicle designs, and provides a scientific basis for building safer protective systems. As the datasets and communication models, including cooperative Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) links, are expanded, the work is expected to evolve along two main directions: enhancing the structural safety of trucks and buses through improved frame design, and creating compact protective devices—such as wearable micro-airbags or sensor-triggered impact modules—that can be integrated into vehicles or carried by pedestrians. By reducing reliance on costly physical crash tests and offering clear, data-driven insights, the innovation holds strong commercial relevance for manufacturers, insurers, and mobility planners, while contributing meaningfully to pedestrian safety in fast-growing urban environments.
