Dr Ahlam Zaid Alkilani
Dr Ahlam Zaid Alkilani is the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and a Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at Zarqa University. She earned her PhD from Queen’s University Belfast, where she focused on improving skin-based drug delivery. With recognised expertise in transdermal systems, she has published widely and her work has been cited internationally. She has received several honours, including the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award, and has been selected as a TWAS Young Affiliate. Her background in pharmaceutical technology qualifies her to design innovations that make treatments easier, safer, and more effective for patients who struggle with traditional oral medications.
Her innovation introduces a new transdermal system for delivering carvedilol through the skin, removing the need for patients to swallow tablets. This solution addresses a major challenge faced by many children and older adults who struggle with pills or experience stomach discomfort from oral medicines. By gently passing the drug through the skin’s barriers, the system offers a comfortable and accessible alternative for those with swallowing difficulties or other medical limitations. This approach is expected to improve adherence, strengthen treatment outcomes, and enhance quality of life.
