Delivering a systems approach

A systems approach is a holistic and interdisciplinary way of understanding and solving complex problems. It sees the world as a collection of interconnected and interdependent elements, people and highlights the connections and relationships between them. A true systems approach doesn't only deliver technical solutions, it ensures technology, processes, interactions and policy are appropriately aligned to deliver innovative solutions to today’s most complex and pressing challenges.

Systems approaches and the Academy 

Engineers are inherently systems thinkers, trained to visualise the big picture and design solutions that consider interdependencies. This engineering mindset is crucial when addressing complex challenges like climate change, urbanisation, and energy transitions. We also know that engineers need to work in partnership with other professions and disciplines in order to develop solutions that are inclusive, safe and sustainable.  

At the Royal Academy of Engineering, we believe the key to solving complex problems lies in understanding the systems that create them. We aim to increase awareness and deepen understanding of systems approaches, empowering individuals, teams and organisations to make meaningful, substantial change.
