INVITATION ONLY
This enlightening event will explore how academic research integrates with government and policymakers, and pathways to impactful contributions. Professor Melissa Mather will share her experiences, frameworks she has learned, and advice from her two years working in the Government Office for Science. She will discuss effective communication with policymakers and emphasize the importance of recognising your worth as a researcher.
Melissa will highlight the unique dynamics of universities and her transition to a civil service role with significant influence, contrasting it with her senior university role. She will emphasise the value of technical knowledge to policymakers and the importance of maintaining deep technical expertise.
The session will provide advice to attendees on how researchers can get involved in policymaking, highlighting opportunities such as secondments and the importance of strategic thinking.
There will then be an opportunity to meet and connect with the speaker and other awardees from across the Awardee Excellence Community.
What to expect:
The event will start with a 15-minute presentation led by Professor Melissa Mather. This will be followed by two 15-minute breakout rooms where awardees will be randomly assigned to rooms to meet each other, spark discussions around the theme and talk about their wider work.
About the series:
The Community Networking series gives you a unique opportunity to meet and connect with other awardees from across the Awardee Excellence Community. The purpose is to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange and facilitate networking in a digital environment. Each meeting will focus on a different cross cutting theme or challenge faced by Community members, relevant across disciplines such as building successful partnerships or public engagement.
All attendees will be required to complete their entry into the Awardee Directory so you will easily be able to find and connect with the people you meet before during and after.
