Bio: Professor Stephen O’Connor is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at City St George's, University of London and a distinguished chartered biomedical engineer with an international reputation in implantable devices and respiratory physiology. His innovations have benefited millions globally, and he has significantly advanced medical technology and professional training. As former President of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), he has contributed extensively to the field for over four decades.
Theme description: The session will focus on the ethical considerations in the advancement of medical technology to improve diagnosis, therapy and most importantly patient outcomes. This includes balancing innovation with ethical responsibility while emphasising patient safety. With some case studies to start a dialogue, this session will be suited to all career stage engineers and innovators to explore how to uphold ethical standards and sustainability in the sector, while driving advances in medical devices.
