This is the first of a new quarterly Engineering Skills for Safety webinar series through which we aim to inform and engage our global audience about the importance of engineering skills for safety, promote safer and innovative engineering, and to form the nucleus of a new safety skills community of practice.
Safety management systems are considered the core of every industrial operation. The importance of these systems is clearly demonstrated by the adoption of the concept into various European national laws in the early 1990s, most notably in the United Kingdom for offshore facilities following the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea. Since then, many different international organisations published their own interpretation of the safety management system or process safety management system. The pillars of these different frameworks are laid on the same foundation and as such, their elements are very similar to each other.
This presentation will give an overview of the most applicable frameworks and provide key findings and learning points through the presentation of a case study where many of the elements of the safety management system failed. Furthermore, it will provide some tips as to what good system, and good implementation, looks like.
Addressing engineering skills for safety challenges is part of the Engineering X Engineering Skills Where They Are Most Needed (ESMN) mission.
