This event is free of charge and the lecture is open to the public, but registration is required.
PUBLIC EVENT
This year's annual East Midlands Regional event is hosted by the Nottingham Trent University. The event will offer plenty of opportunities to network with the Academy Fellows and a wider engineering community within the region.
Our regional lecture will be given by Professor Haida Liang, Professor of Physics, Head of the Imaging & Sensing for Archaeology, Art History & Conservation (ISAAC) research group, Nottingham Trent University. Her talk will demonstrate how various remote sensing and interferometric imaging techniques are used in tandem for material analysis to study history and heritage materials, as the volume of data collected is becoming too large to manage using traditional image analysis methods. Remote standoff reflectance spectral imaging systems have been developed to operate from further distances for automated high resolution large scale survey of wall paintings - such as those in cave temples along the Silk Road. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is used to examine varnish and paint layers on oil paintings. The talk will explore the benefits of interdisciplinary research from fundamental science (e.g. Astrophysics) to applied science and Engineering and how applications to fragile cultural heritage materials can inspire the development of instruments that are useful for industrial monitoring. A short Q&A with the audience will conclude the session.
Prior to the lecture, the opportunity to receive tours of NTU's engineering facilities has been offered to us. Spaces for this are very limited, and primarily for Fellows. However, if you would like to partake, please email Beth Hagen at [email protected] to register your interest.
