In February 2020, the National Infrastructure Commission’s (NIC) Design Group published its Design Principles for National Infrastructure. These four principles – climate, people, places, and value – aim to guide the planning and delivery of future major infrastructure projects in the UK. The group inspires, promotes and champions design excellence in all nationally significant projects.
In this panel discussion, Professor Karen Holford CBE FREng speaks to members of the NIC Design Group on the topic of design principles, followed by a Q&A session. A list of questions discussed can be found here.
This discussion with members of the design group introduces the principles, which ultimately aim to support sustainable economic growth, as well as improve construction and quality of life. Topics for discussion include:
- How can these be embedded in procurement?
- What barriers do we face?
- How can we make a difference throughout the supply change in all disciplines?
- What might design excellence look like?
- Is there a conflict between these principles and what is being delivered?
- What about projects where all four principles do not apply such as offshore industry?
