The Royal Academy of Engineering has launched a new online series of topical fireside chats on current issues to the global professional engineering community. The series will bring together the thoughts of leading experts from across the Academy's networks including Fellows, awardees, and engineering partners.
Engineers can play a critical role in preparing against and curtailing the negative impact of global health crises on the world’s most vulnerable people.
In this Critical conversation, the Academy's CEO, Dr Hayaatun Sillem CBE, spoke with special guest and global public health leader Professor Sir Richard Feachem KBE FREng, who provided an overview of the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and a framework for discussing the required responses. He highlighted the disproportionate impact of health crises on people in low- and middle-income countries and suggests ways in which engineers can contribute to future pandemic responses and the collaborations needed at different levels to make that happen.
They were accompanied by Nitesh Jangir, Co-Founder of Coeo Labs Pvt. Ltd. Nitesh spoke about his collaborations with local clinicians in Bangalore to innovate a low cost, non-invasive ventilator for COVID-19 patients, which is now scaling uptake across India and the global south. Nitesh is an awardee from the Engineering X Pandemic Preparedness programme and an awardee of the Academy’s Leaders in Innovation Fellowships.
