Engineering Solutions, Problem-based learning

Introduction

This resource helps students learn by doing. Instead of being given the answers, problem-based learning (PBL) invites them to explore ideas, work together, and build their own understanding - with teachers guiding and supporting along the way.

These resources take the form of five open-ended projects that conform to a PBL model where students are encouraged to research and develop their own work plans to achieve a technical objective and prepare them better for the world of work.

What's in this resource?

Each project resource consists of:

A student pack which contains key information related to the proposed task and forms to use throughout the various stages of the project
A teacher pack with advise on how to deliver the projects and suggestions for lesson plans
A series of technique sheets provided to support the revision of topics that the students may need to complete the project

Explore the five projects

Cliff Railway

Students act as consulting engineers to explore the challenges faces in the design, construction, and maintenance of a cliff railway (funicular).

Portable Incubators

In this project, students are tasked with developing an incubator that is portable, reliable, and easily deployed in a wide range of circumstances.

Growing Environments

Students are tasked with developing a low-cost hydroponic growing system that minimises its environmental impact through the reuse of waste to create the growing chambers and minimising energy consumed by the system.

EV charging Station

Students act as consulting engineers to explore and consider the factors involved in designing, installing, and maintaining a charging station for electric vehicles (EV) to achieve peak operational performance.

Engineering Opportunities

Students identify an engineering project to address a practical need in an environment they’re familiar with and introduced to a range of creativity techniques and team working skills through an engineering design cycle.
