Grants policies and positions

All researchers and organisations we fund must comply with our grant funding policies and positions which, with our Conditions of Award and Letter of Offer form the Grant Agreement.

2. National Security

All recipients must abide by our National Security Policy, in particular, by reporting any concern about National Security to their Academy contact, attend training events around National Security risks, and abide by risk mitigation plans. 

 

3. Use of AI tools

The Research Funders Policy Group joint statement sets out the Academy’s expectations around the use of generative AI tools in applications and assessment. For specific requirements please also refer to the guidance outlined in scheme notes.

 

4. Equality, diversity and inclusion

The Academy values diversity and inclusion and the different perspectives people from different backgrounds bring to their work and to the engineering profession and expects grantees to abide by our Diversity and Inclusion policy.

5. Codes of Conduct

The Academy Values promote a positive and safe environment for all. The General Code of Conduct provides a single overview of the expectations on all people working with the Academy or attending Academy events including awardees, prize holders and programme participants. It is also complemented by programme specific codes. 

6. Anti-bullying and harassment

The Academy is committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming work environment which is free from harassment and bullying and where everyone can achieve their potential. The Academy will not tolerate any form of bullying or harassment under any circumstances and expects all staff, fellows and awardees to comply with our Anti-bullying and harassment policy.

7. Research integrity and conduct

The Academy expects all awardees to act in accordance with the highest standards of public life, complying with our Anti-Bribery policy and ensuring that all research, development and innovation is conducted in line with UKRIO Code of Practice for Research, with particular note to 3.1.5, 3.17 and 3.18.

 

 

 

8. Sustainability

The Academy acknowledges its responsibility to minimising the impact of its activities on the environment as an intrinsic part of its ambition to harness the power of engineering to build a sustainable society. Awardees should ensure that research is conducted in line with the Academy's Environmental Sustainability Policy and UKRIO Code of Practice for Research (3.8).

 

9. Animals in research

The Academy funds research involving the use of animals in alignment with the Responsibility in the use of animals in bioscience research and the Non-human primate accommodation, care and use documents produced by the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs). This is complemented by the Academy's Animals in Research, Development and Innovation Policy.

10. Open access

The Academy supports the unrestricted online access to research publications for everyone. Awardees are encouraged to use open access routes for their peer-reviewed publications and can apply for associated costs as stated in the Open Access Position Statement.

11. Safeguarding

The Academy acknowledges its duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of all individuals that engage in its activities, including staff, Fellows, awardees and research participants, as well as reducing the risk of human rights violations within our organisation and supply chains. This is covered in the following policies:

14. Grant Principles

The Academy commits to six of the Institute for Voluntary Action Research (IVAR)’s principles of open and trusted grant-making. The Academy has also committed to two additional principles (principles one and two listed below).

15. Reviewer Code of Conduct

Those undertaking any review of a funding application submitted to the Academy are required to accept our Academy reviewer terms before undertaking their review.
