Norman R. Augustine Senior Scholar and Senior Director of Programs, National Academy of Engineering
Guru Madhavan is the Norman R. Augustine Senior Scholar and senior director of programmes at the US National Academy of Engineering. He has advised the US Department of Health and Human Services and European Union Malaria Fund. He previously worked in medical device development, contributing to cardiac surgical catheters and neuromuscular stimulators. He is a systems engineer with an MS, MBA, and a PhD in biomedical engineering, and a ScD (honoris causa) from the State University of New York.
Guru has received honours including the ASME Henry Laurence Gantt Medal for business leadership, AAMI Laufman-Greatbatch Award for contributions to health technology, IEEE Norbert Weiner Award for professional responsibility, IEEE Alfred Goldsmith Award for outstanding engineering communication, IEEE Award for Distinguished Literary Contributions and the George F. McClure Citation of Honor for engineering leadership. He is an elected fellow of the UK’s Institution of Engineering and Technology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He’s also a companion of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Guru is a prize-winning author of essays and books including the popular non-fiction Applied Minds: How Engineers Think and Wicked Problems: How to Engineer a Better World.
