Improving employment opportunities for diverse engineering graduates

Time: 1pm - 5pm
Location: Royal Academy of Engineering, 3 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5DG

This event will launch the Royal Academy of Engineering Graduate Engineering Engagement Programme (GEEP) to support addressing skills gaps through a focus on diverse graduate recruitment. Aside from launching the GEEP, the event will:

  • Share a report on the three-year pilot project that informed the development of the GEEP
  • Report findings from research on the recruitment practices of engineering employers
  • Disseminate an inclusive recruitment toolkit designed with engineering employers in mind
  • Provide an opportunity to find out more about other Academy work on diversity and inclusion – including the This is Engineering campaign

Twelve engineering employers, an external supplier and over 450 students participated in the Academy-led pilot engagement programme that informed the GEEP. The event will provide an opportunity to find out about results so far, and the challenges to increasing the employment of female, ethnic minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged engineering graduates – especially those from newer universities.

This event will also share findings from an investigation into engineering employer recruitment practices by the Academy’s Education and Skills Committee; and insight into an inclusive recruitment toolkit developed by the Academy Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Group (DILG).

Time: 9.30am-2.30pm
Location: Royal Academy of Engineering, 3 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5DG

Overview

This year's annual Diversity & Inclusion Programme (D&IP) plenary event will focus on exploring how to develop more inclusive cultures across the engineering profession. The event will bring together key programme stakeholders and others to celebrate what has been achieved in the last year and consult on plans for the future.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about findings, key messages and recommendations from the Inclusive Culture Project, delivered in the last year to find out more about the culture of engineering, the extent to which it is inclusive and what can be done to make it more so. Progress on other aspects of the programme will also be shared including progress by the Academy Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Group (DILG) of engineering employers, and collective benchmarking across Professional Engineering Institutions using the Progression Framework.

This event is an excellent opportunity for networking and offers a great platform to share ideas and best practice on D&I.
