James Dyson, arguably Britain’s best-known design engineer of modern times, has been elected to The Royal Academy of Engineering, joining the very highest achievers in UK engineering and technology. Also among the 44 new Fellows elected at the Academy’s AGM last week were University of Oxford Professor of Materials, Amanda Petford-Long, robotic surgery pioneer Professor Brian Davies of Imperial College London, BAE Systems Chairman Richard Olver, Siemens Chief Executive Alan Wood and the Technical Director of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project Mike Glover.

The Academy elected four new Honorary Fellows: biotechnology pioneer and venture capitalist Sir Chris Evans, President of the Royal Society Lord May, Director General of the Research Councils Sir Keith O’Nions and the architect Lord Rogers. New International Fellows include the former Mayor of Sarajevo, Professor Kemal Hanjalic.

“I am delighted to welcome such a distinguished and accomplished group of people as Fellows this year,” says Academy President Lord Broers, who gave this year’s BBC Reith Lectures on the Triumph of Technology. “Engineering is the lifeblood of responsible development and gathering the very best people together from industry and academia will help us to give the best possible advice to government and, equally importantly, to inspire young people to see the importance of engineering in today’s world and to consider it as a career.”
