The Higher Education Partnership sub-Saharan Africa programme was launched in 2016, following the Enriching Engineering Education programme.

Enriching Engineering Education, 2013-2015

This programme aimed to bring engineering curricula in universities in line with current industrial practice, and to improve teaching practices in engineering, through a structured partnership between universities and industry.

The University of Zimbabwe and the College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania were selected as ‘hub’ universities, and began the programme in the summer of 2013. Following academic and industry exchange placements, workshops were held to ensure the learning spread throughout ‘spoke’ universities in Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and elsewhere in Zimbabwe.

The programme was generously supported by Anglo American Group Foundation.

Industry - Academia Linkage Programmes Evaluation

In August 2016, The Royal Academy of Engineering commissioned Technopolis Group Ltd to undertake a formal evaluation of the pilot Enriching Engineering Education Programme which ran between 2013 - 2015 and the Academy's Industry-Academia linkage programmes more broadly. The evaluation's aim was to assess and scope means by which the Academy can effectively learn from and exchange lessons between the Academy's programmes. The evaluation also aimed to help guide the design and implementation of a significant upscaling of the Academy's international activities within industry-academia collaboration.
