The Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers – UK Partner Engineers for Change

Project locations: Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria

This project aims to establish an initial framework for the harmonization of engineering education in Western Africa. It also looks at strengthening the capacity of engineering institutions to respond simultaneously to the educational and employability needs of populations.

The project is made up of three parts:

  • Part 1 – Review of member country internal accreditation systems.
  • Part 2 – Independent assessment of 2 further degree courses
  • Part 3 – Pave the way towards attaining international accreditation


The Federation of African Engineering Organisations – UK Partner: RedR

Project locations: Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Ghana

Building on the successes of Phase 3, this project brings together the experience, capacity and networks of FAEO and RedR UK to achieve four outcomes:

  • Part 1 – Organisational and financial sustainability beyond the project timeframe
  • Part 2 – Well trained staff with skills and expertise to deliver FAEO's mandate
  • Part 3 – Stronger Professional Engineering Institutions that can deliver on their own mandates
  • Part 4 – FAEO is regarded as a valuable development partner


The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers – UK Partner: Engineers Against Poverty

Project locations: Nigeria, Ghana

Forging Africa's Future Mechanical Engineers Programme (FAFMEP 2019) is a capacity building and skills development programme targeted at strengthening the capacities of students, graduates and professionals of mechanical engineering. The programme directly addresses the fundamental problem of theory-based education that limits the learner’s ability to transform classroom knowledge into innovative solutions for socioeconomic growth.

FAFMEP 2019 major components are:

  • Regional boot camps
  • An engineering design & creativity festival 2020


The Federation of African Engineering Organisations – UK Partner: Commonwealth Engineering Council (CEC)

Project locations: Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, the DRC, Zimbabwe and South Africa

The objective of this project is to prepare a report on the state of infrastructure in Africa South of the Sahara. Achieving the SDGs is significantly dependent on infrastructure which is effective and in good working order. This project will indicate where a failure to achieve one or more of the SDGs is due to inadequate or poorly maintained infrastructure. The countries of focus are: Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, the DRC, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It will be possible to link the report to the UN report on the SDGs in Africa South of the Sahara, which is one of the nine regions that are used in the annual report prepared by the UN on the SDGs.


Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) – UK Partner: University of the West of Scotland

Project locations: Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya,the DRC, Zimbabwe and South Africa

ShEngineer – INVENT BUILD IT is a programme targeted at building the capacity of female engineers to deliver more socio-economic value to the Nigerian Society. It is an avenue to identify and tackle issues, perception and challenges facing women engineers in Nigeria and respond proactively to these issues through collaborative effort. Through this initiative, 60 female engineers are expected to build their capacity on how to effectively train teachers as well and 500 girls in secondary schools will be mentored to take up engineering as a career.


The Institution of Engineers Rwanda – UK Partner: Engineers Against Poverty

Project location: Rwanda

The project aims to build the capacity of young graduate engineers by bridging the gap between what is attained through educational training at university and engineering practices. This will be done by developing mentorship and internship programs for young graduates to enable them to acquire relevant professional experiences.

The project will also promote diversity and inclusion within the Institution of Engineers Rwanda and information sharing between engineers.


Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) – UK Partner: Engineers Against Poverty

Project location: Uganda

The goal of the project is to foster diversity and inclusion and to enhance the professionalism of UIPE members through training and information sharing. The programme targets marginalized groups such as women engineers, and looks at increasing the number of professionals in underrepresented disciplines such as electrical and mechanical engineering. It also delivers Career Guidance programmes in schools so learners receive insight on engineering careers.


South African Institute of Agricultural Engineers (SAIAE) – UK Partner: The Institution of Structural Engineers

Project locations: RSA, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria

This project will support operations, growth and implementation of the strategic plan for AfroAgEng, with a focus on collaboration and operational and financial sustainability. The development and growth of agricultural engineering in Africa will provide skilled human resources and technology which has the potential to contribute to the reduction of poverty. Project activities include raising the profile of the profession by showcasing the role and capabilities of agricultural engineering, building relationships with industry, government and funding, fostering youth engagement and raising public awareness on agricultural engineering matters.


WomEng – UK Partner: Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership (CISL)

Project locations: South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone

As part of its involvement in the Capacity Building for Women in Engineering Bodies in sub-Saharan Africa, a partnership with professional engineering institutions, WomEng is currently working to empower female engineers in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone. WomEng implements high school and tertiary level outreach programmes in all project countries.

Steps of the project execution include:

  • Assessment of current engineering capacity, diversity and inclusivity within the countries in partnership with the engineering bodies
  • Leadership development training for women in engineering chapter members


Institution of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE- SA) – UK Partner: Commonwealth Engineers Council

Project location: South Africa

This project builds on previous efforts undertaken to prepare online training materials that can improve the delivery of infrastructure throughout Africa, through improved skills, knowledge, expertise and methods. Existing platforms are leveraged to include dispute resolution, framework agreement preparation and local professional development events.

These activities will enhance the knowledge of procurement and delivery management, with particular emphasis on the dispute resolution mechanism of Adjudication.
