The REF team, in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering, is convening a workshop, which will be chaired by Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS, President of the Academy and Chair of Main Panel B for REF 2014.

The consultation on the second REF closed on 17 March 2017. Over 380 responses to the consultation were received from a wide range of organisations, groups and individuals. Responses to the consultation have highlighted where additional development work is needed in order to finalise the framework in some areas. This includes the Unit of Assessment (UOA) structure. To inform the development of the initial decisions on this aspect, the four UK funding bodies would like to engage in further dialogue with the relevant discipline communities where the consultation identified areas for review.

The workshop on 19 June forms part of this further engagement work. Discussion will focus in particular on the issues raised through the evaluation of REF 2014 and responses to the consultation on the structure of the UOAs for Engineering.

We are seeking diverse input into the workshop from senior research leaders in Engineering, including those with responsibility for submissions to REF. Registration is essential as places are limited. If necessary, places will be allocated to ensure broad representation of higher education institutions and engineering disciplines.
