Our Autumn Lecturer made headlines this year with AlphaGo, the first computer program ever to beat the world’s number one player of the fiendishly complex game of Go, in a contest in Seoul that was watched online by 280 million viewers. He has said he is on a mission to “solve intelligence, and then use that to solve everything else”.
Dr Demis Hassabis, Founder & CEO of DeepMind, is one of the three recipients of the Academy's 2016 Silver Medal - for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence following a number of breakthroughs for DeepMind, which was founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014. He was the lead AI programmer on a number of successful computer games in the 1990s and early 2000s before completing a PhD in cognitive neuroscience.
DeepMind is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) machine capable of learning for itself how to do a task directly from raw data, rather than being pre-programmed for a single specific task. Although games are a good testbed for developing general AI algorithms, the ultimate aim is to apply them in areas such as healthcare and science.
The Autumn Lecture was introduced into the Academy's programme in order to provide additional exposure to one of the most innovative and talented engineers who were amongst the recipients of an award at the Academy's annual Awards Dinner.
