All sectors of the economy are producing ever more data — data about customers, operations, partners, products, services, and much more. This data has the potential to transform society and the way we do business as information and knowledge underpin new opportunities for a range of valuable services. But how do we ensure that businesses recognise and maximise the value of the data they own? And what new approaches are needed to ensure that the UK exploits these opportunities to the full?

This event is jointly hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Statistical Society to mark one year since the publication of Connecting data: driving productivity and innovation. Join us at the Academy to hear our expert panel discuss how the fields of engineering and statistics, along with other disciplines, can work together to address future challenges around big data, and the many opportunities materialising at the interface of these disciplines.

The event will be chaired by Professor Jim Norton FREng, Chair of the RAEng Digital Systems Community of Practice, with a panel of speakers including:

  • Professor Mandy Chessell CBE FREng, IBM Distinguished Engineer
  • Dr Mike Short CBE FREng, Vice President, Telefonica
  • Professor David Hand OBE FBA, Imperial College, UK Statistics Authority and Winton Capital
  • Professor Adele Marshall, Queen's University Belfast
