Professor Helen Atkinson CBE FREng will give a public lecture entitled 'Cornflour, ketchup and parts for cars'.

What’s the connection between cornflour, ketchup and parts for cars? Cornflour mixed with water behaves in a strange way. When it is stirred, it gets thicker, whereas if you hold it in your hands it becomes runny. This is the opposite of what happens with ketchup. Give it a good shake and it becomes runny, allow it to stand and it thickens up again. It is thixotropic. Metallic alloys can also be thixotropic when they are part solid and part liquid. This presentation will outline how this property is exploited in the process called thixoforming to make parts for cars and cases for mobile phones.

The lecture will be open to public. A dinner for Fellows and their guests only will follow the lecture where they will be joined by Professor Robert Allison, Vice Chancellor of Loughborough University and Professor Richard Williams FREng, Vice President Fellowship Engagement who will speak about the Academy’s plans for engagement and the next steps.
