The used car test. John F Kennedy's campaign against Richard Nixon posed this question to voters - would you buy a used car from this man? Daniel Finkelstein will explain what politicians do to pass this test and the rules they have to observe. In the process, he explains how to understand modern politics.

Lord Finkelstein, Associate Editor of The Times

Lord Finkelstein is Associate Editor of The Times, a columnist and a leader writer. Before coming to the paper twelve years ago, he worked as adviser to Prime Minister John Major and then to Leader of the Opposition William Hague. At the beginning of his career as a journalist he was a technology writer. He is Chairman of Policy Exchange and joined the House of Lords in October 2013.
