Dr Toby Mottram FREng
Douglas Bomford Trust Chair in Agricultural Mechanisation; Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellow, Royal Agricultural University
Toby Mottram designed and built the UK’s first robotic milking barn and had a major role in the successful design of robotic milking. He recruited and led a team to monitor bovine ovulation with an automated biosensor in the milk line, and invented rumen pH telemetry, which required integrating sensing, wireless telemetry, materials and mechanical design into a pill to be swallowed by a cow. He also patented the bolus system to protect dynamic inversion and temperature switching, and started two precision manufacturing companies.
