Public affairs

Building awareness and understanding and of the contribution of engineering and engineers with political and policy audiences is a priority for the Academy. The authority and rigour of the organisation’s outputs help build influence on national policy.

  • Public affairs overview
Public affairs strategy is currently focused on three policy areas. These encompass a wide variety of other issues.

  • External affairs committee
The External Affairs Committee’s role is to develop an integrated communications, public affairs and public engagement strategy for the Academy. This committee draws on the outputs of the three policy standing committees: Education Committee, International Committee and Engineering Policy Committee.

  • Party conferences 2010
The Academy, and a number of other professional engineering organisations, will be creating an engineering presence at the three main party conferences through a series of platform fringe events.

  • Engineering the Future
Engineering the Future is a banner under which organisations from the professional engineering community (the Academy, the engineering institutions, EngineeringUK, ECUK) are working together to promote the contribution of engineering to the UK’s economic recovery and beyond. This will look to build on the current political interest in engineering as a way of addressing the grand challenges and supporting a refocus of the economy into a science-based, high-value set of industries that address major global and societal issues while creating wealth and jobs.

  • Recent responses to the UK Government and other bodies
Here you can read the Academy’s most recent submissions, including submissions that have been produced jointly with other organisations.

  • Briefing papers
The Royal Academy of Engineering publishes regular briefing papers on a range of topics. These papers provide information, analysis and key policy recommendations on science, engineering and innovation policy issues.

  • Events
These are most recent public affairs events that the Academy has organised or been involved in.
