PolicyNet Meeting

21 September, Sir Keith Peters FRS PMedSci

Sir Keith Peters, co-chair of the Council for Science and Technology (CST) alongside Sir David King, addressed PolicyNet on September 21st. Sir Keith described the role of the CST, the major projects it has recently been involved in and the major issues on which it will focus in the future.

Sir Keith explained that the CST provided the Prime Minister with independent advice on strategic science and technology policy issues. These issues are long-term, cross-government matters, as evidenced by reports recently released by the CST on energy, on health and on public engagement. Sir Keith outlined the topics currently on the CST’s agenda, which include research endeavour – Sir Keith described the challenges faced by strategies to strengthen the UK’s research profile; health impacts; nanotechnology; and barriers to growth in SMEs. In terms of future work of the CST, Sir Keith turned to the audience to ask which issues they would like to see on the CST’s agenda, asking how the institutions and organisation represented would like to work with CST.

Sir Keith then fielded a number of questions on how the CST liaises with institutions, how institutions can be more active in the CST’s work, and how the CST might raise its profile and the profile of its activities.
