PolicyNet Question Time

PolicyNet Question TimePolicyNet held its first Question Time event on 2nd March at Savoy Place. The theme taken was ‘Is EU science, engineering and technology policy in conflict with the UK national interest?’.

Lord Wakeham, formerly chairman of the Press Complaints Commission chaired the event and panellists included Dr Ian Gibson MP, Chairman of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, Dr Gill Samuels CBE, Senior Director Science Policy & Scientific Affairs, Pfizer Global Research & Development, Mr John Weston FREng, Chairman of Spirent plc and formerly Chief Executive BAE Systems and Lord Haskins, formerly Chairman of Northern Foods and now Rural Recovery co-ordinator.

The event was well attended with over 50 PolicyNet supporters. Some of the questions asked included “What UK/EU measures could be taken to improve the global perception of the UK/European science base in order to attract greater business investment? Can the UK go it alone?” and “Is scientific advice used effectively in the development of EU policy; and how could it be improved?” which resulted in an interesting exchange of informative opinions from both the panel and audience leading to a constructive debate that was enlightening.

The PolicyNet team would like to thank the IEE Policy Team for their help in staging the meeting at Savoy Place.
