PolicyNet Inaugural Meeting
Dr
Ian Gibson MP, Chairman of the House of
Commons Science and Technology Select
Committee gave a short talk to PolicyNet
members at the inaugural meeting on 22nd May
2003. Talking about the role of the S&T
Select committee, Dr Gibson said that
science engineering and technology has
recently been pushed up the Government’s
agenda and that respect for it has
noticeably increased in recent years. The
trick of choosing a good inquiry for the
Committee has always been to guess what the
political issues coming up are, for example,
terrorism is currently high on the agenda.
Also, he told PolicyNet that Inquiries are
not meant to be one way affairs, pointing
out that the recent Inquiry into the MRC
came out with a number of positive points
and hopefully provided a number of ideas for
improvement that will be acted upon.
The power of the
Select Committees stems from the timeliness
of Inquiries and the quality of witnesses.
Although unlikely to happen, Dr Gibson
speculated as to how powerful a joint
Inquiry with the House of Lords S&T
Committee might be and he finished by
speculating about some areas that the House
of Commons S&T Committee might look into
over the next year.
