Call for Evidence

The study group welcomes evidence on the core questions of this study. The questions are listed below. Evidence will be collected until October 1st 2008. Please send evidence to the policy team at the Academy, with ‘UK Competitiveness’ in the subject line. Please include your name, contact details, and affiliation with your response.

Core Study Questions

The study is focused on the following high level question:

What actions are required for the UK to maximise its capability to realise benefits from ICT by 2020 and beyond?

This question is further refined into the following more specific questions. Please illustrate your responses with examples, as appropriate. Several of the questions are directed at you and “your enterprise”. As appropriate, please view these questions from the perspective of each enterprise with which you are sufficiently familiar to cite examples.

Also, for participants in government departments please interpret “competitive advantage” as meaning “comparison with other competitor nations”.

While several of the questions are phrased in the timeframe of 2020, we recognise that ICT technology progress is extraordinarily hard to predict beyond just a few years. However, some of potential recommendations will require consideration of this longer timeframe – e.g., education and skills development, investment in areas of possible differentiation.

1.0 How well does your enterprise today harness the benefits of ICT to strengthen its global competitive position?

1.1 What is the present strength of UK ICT capabilities?

1.2 How successful is your enterprise in exploiting ICT for competitive advantage?

1.3 Can you identify specific examples from your enterprise, or your industry, in which there exists clear evidence that ICT use has led to benefits?

2.0 Given the changes taking place in the ICT landscape, what are the expected future (i.e., by 2020) benefits of having the UK as a location for your enterprise?

2.1 How will the technical landscape of ICT capabilities change in the next five to ten years?

2.2 How might governments affect the landscape of ICT capabilities and UK competitiveness? (E.g., through protectionist measures, investment)

2.3 How might the globalisation of capital markets impact ICT investment in your enterprise? (E.g., consider impact on leadership, skills and capabilities).

3.0 What should governments, industry, the professional societies, schools, and universities do to ensure future competitiveness of the UK economy?

3.1 What strategy should be adopted with respect to ICT to enhance UK competitiveness?

3.2 What investment should be made to implement the strategy?

3.3 What is your vision for leadership in ICT and its application?

3.4 What types of ICT skills will be necessary to ensure competitiveness for the UK economy

Please include any additional information you would like the study team to consider.
